Hull cleaning

The most notorious variety of fouling organisms and barnacles are characterized by rigid, rugged outer shells typically between a few millimeters to an inch in diameter.

Barnacles first start out in the naupilus larvae stage, resembling zooplankton as they swim around and eat. The second larvae stage is the cypris, typified by the cessation of food gathering and the beginning of the search for a suitable---permanent---spot where the barnacles can attach themselves. Some of the common spots include ship hulls.

Prevent Hull Damage

Propeller polishing

Stage 1: Development of slime, grasses and immature barnacles

Stage 2: Barnacle growth, now beginning to penetrate the protective coating cleaning at this stage will require a combination bristle and wire brush.

Stage 3: The barnacle has penetrated the protective coating, putting the barnacle in direct contact with the steel hull causing permanent hull damage.

At this stage the anti-foulant is almost non-existent. If the hull is cleaned during Stage 1 when the immature barnacle is just beginning to develop, permanent hull damage can be avoided.

Big Savings

ship maintenance

Hull cleaning process is typically conducted within a 12-hour period while the vessel is at anchorage, loading or discharging. Research has shown that the adoption of a Hull cleaning / propeller polishing routine generates significant savings.

Smooth hull, clean propeller generate fuel saving up to US$7,000 or 48.5 tonnes of fuel per day through propeller polishing, an estimated savings of 12%
